The redevelopment of the existing two storey Nelson Block was initiated by the requirement to improve the building’s accessibility. In addition to the installation of a lift and complete rebuild of the staircases, a full upgrade of the fire safety features and fire ratings was also undertaken.

The interior of the building was modernised throughout, with upgrades of the science laboratories and general teaching spaces. The asbestos based roof cladding was removed and replaced.

Aside from the day to day challenges of working with an existing building, the project also involved careful planning to allow the block to remain operational throughout construction.
